We had the IEP amendment meeting today---Angels new speech therapist was there---she believes Angel has Aphasia not apraxia--Aphasia has more to do with processing the information in which you are given/comprehending it

anyone else here have a child who has Aphasia?

Starting therapy 3 x's a week for 30 minutes a session

She never said expressive aphasia--just aphasia--but expressive language is where she is severly delayed

Yes yet another dx wacko.gif ---I look at it like this though---after all we have been through--and this dx doesnt change who Angel is--just a name for an issue she has had--so just another bump in the road after the big mountains we have already climbed together preemiegroup/thumbsup1.gif

The more I read on aphasia the more confused I get--it says aphasia is brain damage but caused by injury/disease/stroke etc.. after someone already had language skills--Angel has always had problems answering "wh" questions--ya know things she has to process the info(which can take a few minutes) and come up with an answer--sometimes taking forever to get an answer out--you can tell she "knows" the answer, she just cant get it out--not by stuttering or anything--but trying to find the right words--she will talk your ear off just has severe delay in expressive language--sometimes she makes up words to compensate for the words she cant get out

The SLT told us that she didnt have apraxia because apraxia kids couldnt utter sounds--but I thought there were different degrees of apraxia and verbal/non verbal??

She said she would like to work with Angel for 3 to 6 months to see how much progress she makes and then we will talk about long term.

Went to school today and got to sit in on a ST session and talk some afterwards---she does think Angel has a language disorder(not a delay any longer) and processing issues--I enrolled her in private pay therapy twice a week and she gets therapy provided by the school 3 times a week--so 5 days a week for now--she also talked to me about autism spectrum disorders but thats another post!!!!
